Viewing and Printing Adobe Acrobat PDFs

If you are encountering problems viewing or printing the Adobe Acrobat PDF version of an paper, try using the trouble-shooting steps below. There are many variables that can affect one's ability to properly view or print a PDF document. The suggestions below will help to resolve some of these problems.

  1. Make sure you have the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

Journal of Insect Science papers are offered in Adobe Acrobat PDF. Without the free software that will read this file type, you will be unable to open and print them. A free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader may be downloaded here. Once downloaded, open the installation file and follow the instructions provided by Adobe.

With the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader now downloaded and installed, attempt to open the paper again.

  2. Make sure your Adobe Acrobat Reader is opening in a new window, (i.e. not in the browser window).

Configuring Adobe Acrobat Reader to open in a new window as opposed to opening in your browser has been shown to alleviate some problems. To change this setting, double click on the Adobe Acrobat Reader icon to create a new instance of the software.

Once this new instance of Adobe Acrobat Reader is open, Select Edit and then Preference. From the list of preferences you can modify, select Options and you will get a screen that looks much like this:

Click on image to view an enlargement Adobe Acrobat Reader
This screen shot was taken from Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0

Make sure that the box next to Display PDF in browser is not checked.

With Adobe Acrobat Reader now set to open in a new window, close all instances of Adobe Acrobat Reader and attempt to access your paper again.

  3. Make sure your Adobe Acrobat Reader is printing files as images.

Configuring Adobe Acrobat Reader to print files as images has been shown to alleviate some problems. To change this setting, open a PDF file, (this need not be a PDF from the Journal of Insect Science,) and select Print from the menu. You will get a screen that looks much like this:

Click on image to view an enlargement Adobe Acrobat Reader
This screen shot was taken from Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0

Make sure that the box next to Print as image is checked.

With Adobe Acrobat Reader set to print files as images, attempt your print job again.

  4. Try downloading the paper to your computer before printing.

Downloading the PDF to one's home computer instead of trying to print it from the server has been shown to alleviate some problems. Depending on your Internet connection, the download time will vary. Once your file has downloaded, open the PDF with your Adobe Acrobat Reader and print.

In order to download the PDF, Macintosh users will need to hold down the mouse button over the link to the PDF to get a dialogue box, and then select the option "Save this link as...". IBM-comptiable users will right-click the link to obtain a dialogue box and then select "Save target as...".

  5. Try using Adobe PostScript drivers for your printer.

Using Adobe PostScript printer drivers has been shown to alleviate some problems. Follow this link to Adobe's web page on PostScript drivers. You will find links to download the appropriate driver as well as instructions for installation. You may also check with the web site of your printer's manufacturer for more information.
