Intact spiders that were in the light, that had been cooled prior to testing, and that were in the dark, usually either reared or leaped, resulting in scores between 2 (jump) and 1 (rear). Spiders with most of their trichobothria disabled (smeared) usually remained motionless or reared. Differences among these four treatments were highly significant (ANOVA, F = 6.51, P = 0.005). Post hoc tests indicated that the Smear scores were significantly lower than those of each of the other groups (Fisher's PLSD, P < 0.05), and that there were no significant differences between the other groups.
